Jun 6, 2017 · I have been a contrarian on this issue in the past, and I continue to support the bird feeders. I have had two bird feeders for 20 years, with doors that close if squirrels or other "critters" get on them. I am about 200 feet from a large lake and a very large marsh which undoubtedly supports rats, snakes and other unwelcome varmints.

Why Safflower, squirrels and black birds don't like it. We've added 2 additional feeders since then, and have Cardinals, Thrashers, Mocking Birds, Finches and Doves constantly in our yard.

He tried everything including a live trap. One week he live trapped 17 squirrels and drove them 10 or more miles away and released them into a woods.

May 12, 2020 · The real trick is changing the nectar out every couple of days when the weather is hot, cleaning the feeder thoroughly so no mold grows in it. Fermented nectar or mold will make them very sick so don’t bother if you can’t keep up with it. If you can, it’s worth it. We only put out a quarter to half a cup at a time, and keep changing it.
