Alex Ovechkin is knocking on the door of hockey history and the title of the greatest scorer the sport has ever seen. The Washington Capitals legend is closing in on breaking the NHL scoring record of 894 career goals currently held by “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky.

SEATTLE -- Alex Ovechkin scored his 875th career goal and 22nd of the season, and the Washington Capitals pushed their win streak to six games with a 3-0 shutout victory at Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday.

Legendary former Oilers coach and general manager Glen Sather recently shared his surprisingly harsh opinion that he doesn't want Alexander Ovechkin to beat Wayne Gretzky's goal record.

Entering the 2024-25 season, Ovechkin needed 42 goals to break Gretzky’s record of 894 career tallies. After scoring goal No. 875 on January 23, Ovechkin now needs just 20 goals to pass Gretzky for the NHL’s record.

The Great Eight is within striking distance of Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goals record of 894, which Gretzky reached on March 29, 1999, against the New York Islanders. Ovechkin began this season with 853 career goals.

Logan Thompson made 32 saves in his hometown one day after signing a contract extension with Washington, helping the Capitals beat the host Calgary Flames 3-1 on Tuesday night.
