Tata Electronics said on Friday it has bought a 60% stake in Taiwanese contract manufacturer Pegatron's India unit that operates an iPhone plant, beefing up the Tata group firm's position as an Apple supplier in a fast growing market.

Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd has acquired a 60% stake in Pegatron's India unit, reinforcing its position in Indian electronics manufacturing. Pegatron India, a Pegatron Corporation subsidiary, provides electronics manufacturing services.

The announcement is coming after the Competition Commission of India (CCI) gave an approval to Tata Electronics to acquire the majority stake in the company

Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Sons, stated that it has purchased a controlling 60% investment in Pegatron Technology India Private Limited (PTI) as part of a strategic initiative to support India's electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

TAIPEI/BENGALURU -- India's Tata Electronics said on Friday it would acquire a 60% stake in Taiwanese electronics giant Pegatron's Indian plants, paving the way for Apple to deepen its supply chain in the South Asian country amid U.S.-China tensions.

This comes as Tata Electronics is trying to move beyond supplying only to Apple. ET reported that the company is in talks with Xiaomi and Oppo to begin contract manufacturing for the Chinese smartphone companies.
