In northern Scotland¸ hundreds of schools have been shut after a weather warning for snow and ice was extended until Friday. The Met Office has warned that snowfall could reach up to 10 cm in higher regions. The office has issued ‘Yellow’ warning for Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, the Highlands, Orkney and Shetland, as well as the Outer Hebrides.

A yellow alert for Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, the Highlands, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland runs until midnight on Thursday.

Highland Council said almost 140 schools and 100 nurseries were shut while 38 schools in Aberdeenshire and five in Shetland were closed. Temperatures in some parts of Scotland plunged as low as -12.4C overnight,
